WHICH SECURITY LEVEL IS NECESSARY?
Before choosing the cut type, you need to consider the security level. Think carefully about which security level you expect or require your document shredder to provide you with.
Leitz shredders are categorised according to their security level, referred to as the P-level. The P-level is an industry standard specifying how many pieces an A4 sheet of paper is cut into when shredded. The higher the P-level, the smaller the resulting paper particles are, and consequently the higher the security level is.

WHAT CUT TYPES ARE THERE?
When buying a shredder, the cut type is less important than the security level. However, it’s important to understand the differences between the available cut types and their specific characteristics.
CROSS CUT OR CONFETTI CUT PAPER SHREDDERS
Cross cut shredders (also known as confetti or particle cut shredders) reduce a document to many more pieces than the strip cut shredders. Due to the small particles they produce, they offer a security level of at least P-4.
They are suitable for companies and organisations, but also for the home office and for personal use.
Cross cut shredders are often deemed to to offer suitable levels of protection for large offices and small home office shredders. Cross cut shredders are certainly superior to strip cut shredders that simply shred a sheet into vertical stripes that are easy to reassemble, but it is critical to assess whether the P rating of the shredder offers you the required level of data destruction security.
MICRO CUT SHREDDERS
If you want to destroy confidential and secret documents at home or in the workplace, micro cut shredders are a sensible choice. They shred paper into considerably more pieces than cross cut devices. For this reason they automatically obtain a higher level of security, generally having a security level P-5 or P-6.
SUPER MICRO CUT SHREDDERS
Super micro cut shredders with a security level P-6 and P-6+ offer the highest level of security. Documents are shredded into approximately 12,500 pieces – which is practically paper dust. Super micro cut shredders are used by the government and the military, for example, to destroy secret data.
WHAT IS THE RIGHT SIZE SHREDDER?
Generally speaking, the more often a shredder is used and the more regularly large numbers of documents are destroyed, the bigger the model should be. Larger machines have the advantage that their paper waste bin does not have to be emptied so often. In addition, larger shredders tend to offer a higher sheet capacity. This means they can shred more sheets at the same time. Our Leitz IQ machines have a sheet capacity of between 5 and 20 sheets.
HOW CAN I DISPOSE OF A3 DOCUMENTS?
Leitz IQ machines can destroy A3 documents with no problem, simply fold the sheet in half. However, you must carefully ensure you do not exceed the maximum sheet capacity, which is given for A4 paper only.
WHAT ARE THE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR A SHREDDER?
Paper shredders, like any electronic or mechanical device, need a minimum level of regular maintenance. This is very simple with the appropriate Leitz oil sheets, which are fed through the device once a month like a normal sheet of paper. As the oil sheet is shred, it cares for the motor and cutter blades.
WHICH OIL SHOULD I USE?
It is really important that you only use dedicated shredder oil, as in some instances other greases are flammable. Leitz oil sheets leave no excess residue and are easy to use. Leitz oil sheets are suitable for any electronic paper shredder.
FAQs
Most often a paper jam occurs because too many sheets have been fed in at the same time or because material has been fed in which is incompatible with the shredder. More frequent paper jams can also indicate that the device needs maintenance and an oil sheet for must be inserted to maintain the cutter blades. To avoid paper jams, it is best to follow the operating instructions for your personal Leitz IQ model that you received when you purchased your shredder. Incidentally, all Leitz shredders have special anti-jam technology.
Every paper shredder model has a different run time. The run time refers to the amount of time a shredder can be used for non-stop. Once the non-stop run time is reached, each shredding machine will automatically shut down to allow it to cool down. This is a safety measure to prevent the shredder motor from over heating. Leitz IQ shredders offer impressive run times and, importantly, tell you when they are ready for use again via an indicator light.
